VIC BP/D Box Vans
The 41 foot 11½ inches long Victorian Railways BP/BB steel vans first entered traffic in 1958. These vans, together with progressive builds, were numbered in the range 3 to 102. The BP/BB vans could be seen working all over Victoria on various services.
The BP vans featured BX bogies which could be used at passenger train speeds, while the BB vans were fitted with plain bearing XCS bogies which were suitable for use at slower goods train speeds. During the period 1959 to 1974, bogies would often be swapped among the vehicles in this pool of vans with subsequent code changes from BP and BB and vice versa.
When the better quality and faster bogies under the BP vans were required for use under ZLP brake vans, a swap was initiated and the BP vans involved were recoded to BMF. From 1963, another recoding saw the BMF vans become BMX after upgrading once again improved the allowable speed of these vans. Some of these BMX vans were downgraded back to the BMF coding when aligned bogies were fitted in 1978/1979. With the introduction of 4-letter wagon codes in 1979, the BMX vans became VBAX, the BMF vans became VBAY and the BP vans became VBPY.
In 1983, all VBPY vans were recoded to D vans and were primarily used attached to passenger trains.
