This locomotive class was designed specifically for Australian conditions, drawing on earlier Downer EDI Rail models like the narrow-gauge GT42CU AC and the standard-gauge GT46C. The GT42CU AC featured a 12-cylinder EMD 710 engine with scaled-down traction motors, while the GT46C used a 16-cylinder version with DC traction.
The more advanced American SD70ACe used IGBT inverters but was too heavy for Australia’s standard gauge limit of 134 tonnes, weighing 188 tonnes. The GT46C already pushed that limit, leaving no room for heavier components or larger cooling systems without reducing fuel capacity.
This class uses AC traction with a Mitsubishi Electric system, including a TA17 traction alternator, CA9E companion alternator, six ITB 2630 traction motors, and solid-state IGBT inverters. It’s powered by a turbocharged 16-cylinder EMD 710 engine and includes passive steer bogies to reduce wear on curves. Production was based at Cardiff until 2014, with components from Port Augusta and Kelso. Newer versions have since been built in the US.
